I should have planned better, but I did not. My husband and I both work remotely most of the days. Here I am standing in my kitchen, cleaning again. Meanwhile, my son loves rice and dal but also has been to a few Michelin places…it’s all about balance?ġ:30 p.m. For me food is such an important connection to my mom, family, culture, and children. We hardly ever went to a sit-down restaurant. Going out to eat meant things like Taco Bell or ordering pizza. My mom used to work 12-hour shifts in a factory, come home, and make bhaji, chapati, rice, and dal every day for us. How often in a week did your parents or guardians cook at home? Nearly every single day. I’m embarrassed by this sometimes, but this is why they uprooted their lives and brought us here, right? So their daughter could have very unhealthy food/spending habits? (Too much to unpack here, lol.) We also had a diet that was 90% vegetarian. We were a family of immigrants, and I moved to the States from India when I was eight, so I don’t know how my parents made it work sometimes! I occasionally spend more $ on one meal than they probably made in a month. How often in a week did you dine out while growing up? Literally never. I absolutely love to cook and come up with recipes and try new things for myself and for my kids, so cooking is really important to me. There are other weeks when we make most of our food and we only go out once a week. There are some weeks when we do four to five meals out. How often in a week do you dine out versus cook at home? Honestly, it depends on the week.
